Food culture: a monastery dinner

kdlhD

Our food research lab dived into the food culture of monasteries. Beginning of June on a Saturday full of sun we were invited to the monastery garden of Kyritz. Our guests experienced a three course menu discovering traditions and rituals from the former life of the monks. We started with a ceremony of wearing the same coats and washing our hands in blossom water. Furthermore we included the aspect of a close community by eating from the same plate with hands tight up with your neighbours. For the main course shared plates and fermented vegetables in jars were served, followed by a dessert that had to be cracked with a hammer. We were dedicating the menu to edible flowers and herbs to appreciate the monks work in the garden and the healing power of their plants. Christoph Lenzen from Markthalle Neun harvested his most beautiful flowers for us which found their way on our guests plates one after the other. The interactive dinner was accompanied by Verena Rein from ganz.kultur with small monastery stories.
